Ulbricht Natural Wood King Nutcracker — 17 inch

The historical record is clear on this point: the natural-finish king is the more difficult figure. A painted king forgives. A natural king does not. Every irregularity in the grain of the linden, every imperfect chisel mark, every misaligned joint — all of it remains visible. The workshops of Seiffen have long treated the natural finish as a quiet test of competence. Christian Ulbricht's house, operating in continuity with the Seiffener Nussknackerhaus lineage, passes that test with the seventeen-inch figure now before you.

Several details merit the attention of the serious collector. The crown is stained a deep reddish-brown and carved with alternating pale-wood points, each terminating in a small gold ball finial — a construction that requires the turner to alternate finishes within a single assembly, an uncommon technique. The epaulettes are gold-fringed textile rather than painted, lending the shoulders a weight the brushwork alone cannot achieve. The wig and full beard are real hair in the manner the Ulbricht workshop has practiced since the mid-twentieth century. The scepter in the right hand is turned wood, gold-finished; the belt buckle, boot tassels, and cuffs repeat the gold note with documentary consistency.

The Castle keeps this figure in the Records Room, stationed beside the filing cabinet of provenance cards. It is, in a manner, the steward's king. Clara finds him austere. Drosselmeyer finds him suspiciously correct. One considers both observations noted, and proceeds with the documentation.
