Natural Gold Santa German Nutcracker by Ulbricht

A pale wood. A mahogany stain settling into the grain like long twilight. A white beard, real hair, falling exactly the length silence would fall if silence could be measured.

This is Christian Ulbricht's Santa in the natural-and-gold finish, and the detail that belongs to winter is the staff. Look closely. It is not a staff at all. It is a tiered Christmas tree, turned on a lathe in the old Seiffen way — disc above disc above disc, each smaller than the last, each bearing small ball ornaments set at intervals like snowfall caught mid-descent. The tip comes to a point. The whole thing is finished in natural wood and gold, the way cold sunlight finishes a birch forest at four in the afternoon.

At his feet, a dark maroon sack. Cinched with a twisted cord. And from the opening, a small natural-wood rocking horse, visible but not announced. One toy. Not a dozen. The restraint is the point.

Somewhere in the Castle — in a room with no name, past the clockwork door and before the long corridor that always feels colder than the rest — he stands beside a window that looks out on nothing in particular. I pass him sometimes. The tiered tree catches what light there is. The rocking horse waits in the dark fabric of the sack. I have never seen him move. I have also never been certain he does not.
