Heart King German Nutcracker by Christian Ulbricht

A king is measured by what he is willing to hold in his hands. This one holds two things: a gold scepter taller than his crown, and a small heart-shaped pendant dangling from a fine chain at his thigh. That second detail is where Christian Ulbricht's carvers quietly tell you everything. A lesser workshop gives a king a scepter and stops there. Ulbricht gives him a scepter and a secret — a token he carries on a chain, as if the weight of rule required something small enough to be easily lost.

Fourteen point eight inches of Seiffen craftsmanship in the workshop's two-tone palette: dark reddish-brown mahogany stain against pale natural linden, the finish my fellows in this category know well. The crown carries the heart motif raised at the front with a gold band at its base. The jacket bears four hand-painted gold hearts arranged across the chest. Gold fringed epaulettes. A real-hair wig and full beard in white, an Ulbricht signature since the 1950s. The heart repeats — on crown, on scepter tip, on chest, on pendant — four times in four registers, the kind of quiet repetition a casual shopper overlooks and a collector counts.

He stands in the Castle's west hall with the other monarchs, near the window where the winter light arrives sideways. Herr Stahlbaum tells me the heart-king is the oldest of the Erzgebirge royal suites, older than the Ulbricht catalog records. I suspect he is right. There is a steadiness to this figure the workshop cannot fake. Some kings are carved to command. This one is carved to remember that command is a thing carried, not claimed.
